Lesson: dangers lurking online
The lesson focuses on recognizing scams on the internet.
The aims are to:
- get to know the most common online scams
- understand why scams exist
- explore the topic using the Cyber City Tycoon mobile game.
Game
Playing Cyber City Tycoon at home or in class
Students play the Cyber City Tycoon game alone or in small groups. The game can be played on a phone, tablet, or computer in a browser. The aim is to explore the game’s different levels and characters.
Task
Reflection on the game
Discuss with the class:
- What scam techniques are presented in the game? (In order, factories 1–5: phishing, spam messages, trolling, romance scam, phone scam)
- Have you encountered any of these scams yourself?
- Why are such scams carried out?
Task
Character card activity
Students are divided into five groups, and each group is given a character card (Phishermäns Freud, Mail Man, Mr. Trollers, Ro Mans, Phoney Call):
- The task is to get to know the game character and their description.
- In groups, discuss the character’s goals.
- Consider how the character’s scams could be prevented and whether the methods the character uses could be encountered in real life.
Task
Summary
Bring the groups back together and ask each group to share one thing they learned or realized about their character.
Hold a class discussion on how the skills learned can be applied to safe internet use in real life.
